Meet Emily

There’s nothing like summer! Here in Michigan, these are the months we look forward to and this year feels extra special as we get ready to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Around here, we’re weaving in more American stories, learning about the Revolutionary War in our homeschool, pulling out the red, white and blue, and bringing back those simple, summer traditions: backyard BBQs, bonfires, endless popsicles.

Slowing down and preserving an analog childhood is something I write about in my book Mama Bear Survival. If you’re looking to slow down and make this season a little more meaningful, here are a few of my favorite finds for creating an Americana summer filled with family memories as I shared on FOX 17 this week.

Wear Your Patriotism with Natan Jewelry

Bracelets on news set

Natan creates beautiful handmade jewelry by a sweet homeschool family in Alabama. I love the Americana collection with red, white and blue designs that are perfect for celebrating America all summer long. The jewelry is gold-filled, so it’s made to handle real life: swimming, showering, sweating and all the adventures that come with summer.

I also love that every piece has an intentional name and Scripture verse, making it a meaningful gift. The best part about this special, faith-driven business is that Natan donates 20% of its profits to support families through pregnancy centers across the country.

Pack a Picnic with Amish Baskets

Basket and American flag on FOX 17 news set

Nothing says summer quite like packing up a picnic and heading to the beach, the park or your favorite hometown festival. Amish Baskets creates handwoven baskets that are truly heirloom pieces. Each one is woven by one of four Amish families on the Iowa-Missouri border and signed by the artisan who made it. These baskets can be used year-round- a picnic basket in the summer, beautiful linen storage in the off-season.

There are beautiful recipe boxes that can double as homeschool flashcard holder or a box to store special letters. Or a casserole or bread basket that also looks beautiful on the table. Each one is meaningful and can be customized with a note or family name on a brass plate.

Set a Beautiful Americana Table with NOTPERFECTlinen

Stack of linen clothing on news set

One of the easiest ways to make an ordinary meal feel special is by setting a beautiful table! I love the handcrafted linens from NOTPERFECTlinen because they’re made to order in gorgeous colors and patterns like Marsala gingham, indigo and blue checks that create a timeless Americana feel.

Using cloth napkins and linen tablecloths is obviously a sustainable choice, but it also creates a sense of occasion and special gathering.

One of my favorite things is that you can customize your pieces and build a collection that becomes part of your family’s celebrations for years to come. NOTPERFECTlinen is beautifully handcrafted and made to order. There is a bit more wait and a lot more intention when you shop from an ethical, family-owned business. One festive suggestion this summer… order a dress to match your favorite table linens!

Cook Up a Little History with Smithey’s American Anniversary Skillet

Cast iron skillet on news set

Cast iron and American heritage simply belong together. Whether you’re making cornbread, peach cobbler, burgers on the grill or breakfast over a campfire, a quality cast iron skillet becomes part of countless family meals.

To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, Smithey Ironware created a limited-edition No. 11 American Anniversary Skillet featuring an in-flight bald eagle, 13 stars and commemorative dates honoring this historic milestone.

It’s a beautiful American-made piece that’s just as worthy of cooking dinner on the stove or over the campfire as it is hanging on the kitchen wall between family gatherings, and one that can easily be passed down for generations.

Capture the Memories with Camp Snap

cameras on TV news set

The best part of summer isn’t documenting every moment, it’s actually being present for it! Camp Snap has become one of my favorite screen-free summer products because it lets kids capture memories without getting pulled into notifications, apps or endless scrolling.

The camera brings back all the nostalgia of disposable cameras from our childhood, but without the cost or hassle of developing film. It’s rechargeable, simple to use and doesn’t include a screen, encouraging kids to stay engaged with the adventure instead of reviewing every photo.

The newest version includes upgraded filters, a faster flash and even more kid-friendly features, making it perfect for road trips, camping weekends, beach vacations and everyday backyard adventures.
